Learn the Biking Laws

It's important to know the laws that way you can keep yourself safe, as well as, other people.

  • On-Street Biking
    -In the State of Nebraska, cyclists have many of the same privileges and responsibilities as drivers. -Cyclists should obey all the rules of the road. You must stop at stops signs, stop lights, and ride with the flow of traffic. -Cyclists must yield to all pedestrians. -Nebraska State law requires cyclists to ride single file at all times. -Avoid biking on sidewalks, unless no other option exists.
  • Biking on Sidewalks
    Cyclists are permitted to ride on sidewalks in the City of Lincoln, except for the following locations: -Downtown -Havelock Avenue, 61st to 63rd -48th Street, Baldwin to Madison -West side of 48th, Prescott to Cooper -Prescott, 47th to 48th -West side of 66th, Holdrege to Fairfax
  • Biking at Night
    -Front and rear lights are required a half-hour after sunset until a half-hour before sunrise. -Bicycle lights must be visible from at least 500 feet.
  • Bike Lanes
    -Always travel in the direction of traffic. -When changing lanes, you must signal to traffic. The traffic in the lane you're merging into has the right-of-way.
  • Trail Biking
    -Keep to the right of the trail, unless passing. -Pass on the left. Verbally notify any pedestrians if you're doing so. -Ride single file. -Obey all road and trail signs. -Cyclists must yield to pedestirans and skaters.
